In April, we launched Shopify Partner Academy, a series of courses, study guides, and quizzes that can help you develop important commerce skills, test your knowledge, and grow your proficiency with Shopify.
But we weren’t ready to leave it at that.
In an effort to help you further test and deepen your skill set, we’re thrilled to announce a new component of Shopify Partner Academy: technical exams. We’ve already launched one exam—the Theme Development Certification—with more on the way in the coming months.
Read on to get the full story on these new exams, and to see how they can help you elevate your craft.

Why take a technical exam?
With a focus on measuring your technical understanding of the ins and outs of Shopify, these exams act as a gauge of your technical expertise. By setting a benchmark for knowledge, they will help you and your team measure, deepen, and maintain your Shopify skill set.
Taking an exam will show you where your expertise lies, and where you have room to learn and grow as a professional. Technical exams can also help you grow your team, by testing new hires and ensuring that your whole organization has a thorough understanding of working on the Shopify platform.
By building your proficiency with Shopify, you can continue providing excellent, cutting edge service to clients. And as your knowledge base grows, you can start tackling bigger, better jobs.
Theme Development Certification exam
You can start testing your Shopify know-how today, with the Theme Development Certification exam. An 80 question exam, Theme Development Certification covers all areas of Shopify front-end development, including Liquid, custom styling, front end tooling, sales, accessibility, theme specific app integrations, and more.
This exam is a great opportunity for all Shopify Partners, no matter your expertise, to get more context on what goes into designing and building Shopify themes.
How can I study for it?
You don’t need to take a course before attempting this exam, meaning experienced theme developers can jump right in. However, if you’re just getting started with Shopify theme development, or want to brush up your knowledge before diving in, here are some resources you can study:
- The Shopify Liquid Cheat Sheet
- Design and Theming Fundamentals course
- Shopify Help Center
- Shopify Web Design and Development Blog
If you don’t pass the exam on your first try, don’t fret! There’s no limit to how many times you can take it. However, questions are randomly generated each time, so it’s best to check out the above resources before you take another stab.
Test your skill set
Technical exams are a great opportunity for you and your team to test your Shopify knowledge and understanding of the platform. You can use them to set a benchmark for training, as well—these exams can act as a standard to ensure your team is consistently following best practices, and as a tool for onboarding new hires. Technical exams can set a high quality standard of work, and help you articulate your skill set in a measurable way.

Keep an eye out as we add more technical exams for you to test your skill set, grow your business, and find success as a Shopify Partner.
