What are customer segments?
Imagine you’re an apparel brand and have just released a new line of extra warm winter hats that you want to market to your customers. Instead of marketing these hats to customers living in warm climates, you can create a segment of customers who live in cold cities and send them a personalized message promoting the value of your extra warm winter hats. This precision allows you to send relevant information to the right customer at the right time to drive revenue.
Once a customer segment is created and saved, the benefits include:
- A segment will update automatically. Every time a customer meets a criteria in a saved segment, they will be added to that segment. Similarly, when a customer no longer fits that criteria, they will automatically fall out of that segment. No updates needed on your end, which saves you time.
- You get valuable stats on your segment. These stats include the number of your current customers that fit into the segment and what percentage of your current customers this represents. This information can help you better understand your business and potential promotions that you may want to run.
- You get better marketing results. Since you’ll have a precise target audience built to market to, you will be able to speak to the right people at the right time, which will lead to stronger results.
Segment customers through an intelligent query language built for commerce
With Customer Segmentation, you can easily build segments of your customers by leveraging your own customer data, without ever needing to leave the Shopify platform. The segmentation editor is powered by ShopifyQL. This is our new query language, built with commerce in mind.
By building customer segments with ShopifyQL, you can turn insights into action with minimal lift. This flexibility provides you with the tools you need to drive more revenue and run your business more efficiently.
Once a segment is built and saved, it becomes simple to deploy personalized, revenue-driving messaging in a few clicks through Shopify Email. The advantage of sending an email to a particular segment of your customers/subscribers (as opposed to sending the same message to all of your customers/subscribers) is that you can personalize the messaging in a way that speaks directly to them. For example, if you created a segment of VIP customers, tell them how much you appreciate their business and consider giving them access to a special pre-sale to reward them for their loyalty.
Saved searches are now customer segments
With the introduction of Customer Segmentation, saved searches that lived within the Customers section of the admin have been automatically migrated into customer segments.
Additionally, any segment you create within the Customers section of Shopify will now also appear in the Discounts section of the Shopify admin, making it possible for you to apply discounts to segments. This will make it easier for you to apply bulk discounts to particular groups of customers while seamlessly delivering personalized experiences to groups of customers.
Say farewell to generic “batch and blast” messaging and say hello to personalized messaging that drives revenue and helps your business stick out from the crowd. Start building customer segments in minutes and begin taking your business to the next level today.
