As a Senior Engineer on the Merchant Authentication team at Shopify, you will play a crucial role in driving the evolution of how millions of merchants securely access and interact with our platform. This team is at the heart of our identity and access management infrastructure, shaping foundational authentication systems that power Shopify's merchant facing experiences at scale.

Your work will directly influence the security posture and usability of critical access pathways across web and mobile platforms. You'll partner with product, security, and platform teams to design and implement secure, scalable, and seamless authentication experiences including passwordless flows and support for industry leading standards like WebAuthn and Passkeys. The systems you build will serve as part of the core system that is leveraged across the entire Shopify ecosystem, protecting merchant data and enabling trusted commerce on a global scale.

As a senior engineer, you’ll help set the direction for authentication across Shopify, contributing to long-term architectural decisions, and championing security first thinking in development. This role is ideal for someone who thrives on solving complex security challenges in distributed systems, and who wants to shape how modern identity is built at internet scale.

What We're Looking For

• A strong background in back end engineering. We use Ruby, TypeScript, MySQL, and Linux, and you'll have a leg up if you have deep experience with two or more of these.

• Demonstrable work experience involving security and authentication standards such as OAuth, OpenID Connect (OIDC), Passkey, TOTP, WebAuthn, SAML, etc.

• Excellent problem solving skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to articulate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
