About the role

Shopify Brand Marketing is hiring for a Head of Community Marketing (Shopify Spaces) that will develop and implement the strategy for fostering engaged, local entrepreneur communities in key markets like New York City and Los Angeles. Shopify Spaces are IRL event venues that host buzzworthy retail pop-ups in partnership with brands built on Shopify, as well as educational commerce workshops and inspirational founder panels for aspiring entrepreneurs. 

Ideal candidates will have previously built and scaled successful community marketing programs in the DTC/retail or startup/venture capital spaces, will bring a personal network of DTC brands and commerce experts to the table, and will have knowledge of event marketing as well as digital marketing channels. This new role will report to a Director, Brand Marketing. Community marketing takes many different forms, so please read this job description carefully before applying.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Set Strategic Vision: Develop the strategy, roadmap, budgets and KPIs for Shopify Spaces across our current NY and LA locations, and inform the strategic expansion of Shopify Spaces to new, future locations

  • Lead Community Engagement & Outreach: Serve as a visible, external ambassador for the Shopify Spaces mission and build relationships with influential, local entrepreneur communities. Source, pitch and secure relevant event partnership opportunities with DTC brands & founders, ecommerce agencies, and key players in the commerce ecosystem. 

  • Guide IRL Brand Storytelling: Translate Shopify brand, product, and audience narratives into memorable IRL experiences in partnership with your team, internal creative collaborators, and external partners. 

  • Build Multi-Channel Marketing Journeys: Grow and nurture our local entrepreneur communities across content/web, email, paid + earned social. Implement plans through a mix of directly managed + matrixed marketing channels.

  • People & Resource Management: Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team, setting a high bar for craft excellence and critical thinking. Help team members troubleshoot vendor/supplier relationships. Drive productivity gains for your team by experimenting with new tools and technologies.

  • Internal Collaboration: Serve as an internal ambassador for the Shopify Spaces mission and build high-trust relationships with counterpart brand marketing teams (social, creator & celebrity partnerships) along with collaborators across content & SEO marketing, product & product marketing, revenue marketing. 

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in a senior brand marketing or community marketing leadership role

  • Strong strategic thinking and planning skills, with the ability to translate vision into actionable plans

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels

  • Demonstrated ability to manage and develop high-performing teams.

  • Experience managing IRL and remote teams in multiple cities

  • Strong understanding of the entrepreneurial ecosystem and retail/commerce trends

Other Notes:

  • Role requires business travel between Shopify Spaces in NY and LA

  • Role expected to work from our NY or LA office ~1 day/week
