How Shopify fuelled Flying Tiger Copenhagen’s international expansion into 27 countries in just one day

Denmark-born, Flying Tiger Copenhangen’s conception dates back to 1995, where founders Lennart and Suz Lajboschitz opened their first brick and mortar store in a local neighbourhood in Copenhagen. 30-plus years later, the Flying Tiger Copenhagen brand has 950 stores across the globe and over 7,500 employees, offering unique products designed to bring joy to everyday life.

With Shopify, Flying Tiger Copenhagen has seen:

  • 5x overall sales growth
  • Double the conversion rate by moving to Shopify
  • 3 x traffic increase

Challenge

With a strong heritage in physical retail, Flying Tiger Copenhagen wanted to optimise their ecommerce platform and online shopping experience as they scaled internationally. However, their previous manual enterprise system was time-consuming and inefficient.

The team was keen to prioritise the deployment of multiple payment methods across countries, so that they could tailor the checkout to each region and enhance the customer experience. Flying Tiger was also keen to relaunch the website for consumers.

Shopify has a great ecosystem of apps and integrations that enables continuous improvement to customer experience.

Solution

By migrating to Shopify, Flying Tiger Copenhagen was able to utilise Shopify Markets to manage multiple international markets from a single store, streamlining their ecommerce operations. The brand managed to launch and offer tailored shopping experiences in 27 countries and 18 languages in just one afternoon, with the support of their partner agency fusefabric, one of Shopify’s largest agencies in Europe specialising in enterprise clients. To handle that effectively, Flying Tiger Copenhagen integrated Avalara, a third party tax engine, to meet the complex tax requirements across Europe.

Since then, the business has been able to repeatedly innovate thanks to the continuous rollout of features and time to market that Shopify offers. Flying Tiger Copenhagenhas also upgraded the customer shopping experience and added express payment methods, with a focus on implementing multiple transactions and currencies online quickly.

Integrating with existing enterprise systems has been crucial in optimising business processes. Previously manual and tedious tasks, such as setting up new product pages and changing the appearance of the website, have now been streamlined.

Shopify has accelerated the brand’s international expansion, as well as the interoperability piece as it connects back into other systems within the enterprise landscape.

Results

Shopify has taken part in powering the business to be able to grow as an enterprise with strong ambitions for omnichannel, with 950 stores in 36 countries.

With the help of Shopify, Flying Tiger Copenhagen has seen sales on their website increase fivefold since upgrading to the Shopify Plus plan, traffic triple, and doubled the conversion rate thanks to the enhanced features available to them.

Streamlined integration with their existing enterprise systems has resulted in reduced overhead costs, increased efficiency, and decreased human error. The finance team is now better equipped to reconcile payment and account issues, enabling them to provide an improved customer experience. In future, Flying Tiger Copenhagen plans to extend their localisation capabilities online to ensure the best possible customer experience in every country they operate in.
